Diaper Definitions
All these terms are confusing when first starting out. Here are some definitions to help clarify what we’re talking about!
Pocket diaper- A diaper that consists of an outer waterproof layer and an inner layer of microfleece or suedecloth. These two layers are sewn together on three sides to form a pocket in which you place an absorbent insert. The layer next to baby wicks moisture into the insert, keeping your baby’s skin dry. These diapers are extremely popular for their convenience, adjustable absorbency, and stay dry linings.
Flat diapers- These are the diapers your grandmother used. A flat diaper is a large, square, single layer of cloth that requires intense origami-like folding. Can be laid into a snug fitting cover or used with pins or snappis. Requires a waterproof cover.
Prefold diapers- These are rectangular cotton or hemp cloth diapers. ‘Regular’ diapers are 4x6x4 layers thick (4 layers on the outer thirds, and 6 layers in the center) and ‘premium’ are 4x8x4 layers thick. Prefolds do require a little folding (in thirds, usually), so their name only makes sense if you know what a ‘flat’ diaper is. Prefolds can be laid into a snug-fitting wrap or you can use pins or snappis for a more secure fit. They are highly absorbent, last for several children and have multiple uses, including stuffers for pocket diapers, burp rags, changing pads, and cleaning. These require the use of a waterproof cover.
Cover/Wrap- These terms are interchangeable. Covers and wraps go over diapers as a waterproof layer. They can be made of polyurethane laminate (PUL) fabrics, polyester fleece, or wool. Some are secured using snaps, and others use ‘aplix’ which is a hook and loop closure similar to Velcro.
Fitted diaper- A shaped diaper sized to fit your baby. Has snaps or aplix to fasten and usually elastic thighs and waist. Requires a waterproof cover.
All-in-one diaper- Absorbent diaper and waterproof cover sewn together. No separate pieces required.
Insert- Absorbent material for stuffing into pocket diapers.
Doubler- Extra layers of absorbent material you can lay into your prefold or fitted diapers to increase absorbency for heavy-wetters, overnight, long car trips, etc.
